How to Start your Research

If you are looking for a place to start your research on an artist, medium, period, country, style, you can start by searching Dictionaries and Encyclopedias for your topic, or reviewing the appropriate section in a general art history survey text book. Both these resources will give you dates, key artists, collections, names of historians and other terms to help narrow your search. 

Great sources to find images for research and study can be found in the Image Resources section. These databases that will help you find high quality and properly identified and attributed images of artwork.

Publications about recent research and more specific subjects in the field of art history can be found through searching the databases in the Finding Articles section.

For exhibition catalogs, monographs on individual artists, and publications focused on single time periods, media, and styles look at the Books and EBooks section for items you can access in the Library and online.
