How to Use Legal Encyclopedias

Encyclopedia entries are written by legal experts as a way to orient researchers exploring a new topic. For environmental law topics, encyclopedias can clarify if a particular area of law falls under federal, provincial, or municipal jurisdiction, with links to relevant primary law. The table of contents for an entry list out the major topics within an area of law. For instance, the Hasbury's Laws of Canada entry for Environment includes an overviews of regulation by specific topics such as regulatory schemes, air, water, solid waste, toxic and hazardous substances, etc.
 

 

A subsection of an encyclopedia on a particular topic will give an overview of law and provide links to the relevant legislation and case law within the footnotes. Students should refer to this primary source material for their research.
