A Persistent Identifier is "a long-lasting reference to a digital resource. Typically it has two components: a unique identifier; and a service that locates the resource over time even when its location changes" (Digital Preservation Coalition). Persistent Identifiers can refer to digital objects, such as the Digital Object Identifier (DOI), but they can also be applied to you, as a researcher. In short, Persistent Identifiers are means of establishing a centralised scholarly presence. In many of these areas, this will extend to downloadable metrics that quantify the work that you have published.
