MMIWGM2S and Red Dress Day

What is Red Dress Day?

Red Dress Day (May 5, annually) raises awareness for missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, men and two-spirit people (MMIWGM2S). Red Dress Day began as the REDress Project, an art installation by Métis artist Jamie Black, consisting of hundreds of red dresses hanging in public spaces.

“The word redress means to remedy or set right.”

The display of red dresses in public spaces is meant not just as a memorial for MMIWGM2S, but as a call to action (Native Women’s Association of Canada).
