This guide provides an introduction to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), and links to key books, journals, databases, and professional associations.
The following databases are a good place to start finding peer reviewed articles on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). ERIC is the predominant database for SoTL articles. If you are looking for SoTL research in a specific discipline it is often helpful to check the databases for that discipline in addition to education-specific databases.
ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center) is the US national bibliographic database of education literature. Sponsored by the US Department of Education, ERIC consists of two files: Resources in Education, covering the document literature, and Current Index to Journals in Education, covering published journal literature.
The database also contains full text of the ERIC document collection, which includes a wide variety of resources such as teaching guides, research reports and issue papers. Most of these records are available electronically and can be viewed in PDF format from links within ERIC (requires Adobe Acrobat viewer).
ProQuest Research Library provides one-stop access to thousands of full-text periodicals from one of the broadest, most inclusive general reference databases ProQuest has to offer. Search from a highly-respected, diversified mix of scholarly journals, professional and trade publications, and magazines covering over 150 subjects and topics.
Google Scholar provides a simple way to broadly search for scholarly literature. From one place, you can search across many disciplines and sources: peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, abstracts and articles, from academic publishers, professional societies, preprint repositories, universities and other scholarly organizations. Google Scholar helps you identify the most relevant research across the world of scholarly research.

Web of Science is the online version of the Science Citation Index, Social Sciences Citation Index and the Arts & Humanities Citation Index. Users can search 8,500 international research journals in the sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities. The Web of Science also provides cited reference searching
Via Proquest Dissertations and Theses access is provided to the full-text of over 400,000 Masters and PhD theses from 1997 onwards. In addition, citations are provided for over 1.6 million doctoral dissertations and master’s theses from 1,000 North American and European graduate schools from 1861. For those dissertation listings after 1980 there are 350 word abstracts and for Master’s theses after 1988, there are 150 word abstracts.

The following journals publish articles on SoTL research being conducted in all disciplines in higher education.
Active Learning in Higher Education is an international, refereed publication for all those who teach and support learning in higher education and those who undertake or use research into effective learning, teaching and assessment in universities and colleges. The journal has an objective of improving the status of teaching and learning support as professional activity and so looks at academic theory and practice applicable in/to all disciplines and contexts/countries in higher education.
An open access online journal dedicated to publishing quality peer-reviewed articles and essays in French and English that address teaching and learning interests of universities and colleges across Canada.
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning is an open-access, double-blind peer reviewed electronic journal published in May and November each year by the Center for Teaching Excellence at Georgia Southern University. The journal is an international forum for information and research about the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) and its implications for higher/tertiary education. Anchored in inquiry and engagement, the scholarship of teaching and learning re-conceptualizes teaching as an ongoing and scholarly process with an emphasis on bringing about improved student learning (Huber & Morreale, 2002). SoTL is a key way to support the continuous transformation of academic communities and cultures.
The Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (JoSoTL) is a forum for the dissemination of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in higher education for the community of teacher-scholars.
An Australian journal that aims to provide a forum for educational practitioners in a wide range of disciplines to communicate their teaching and learning outcomes in a scholarly way. Its purpose is to bridge the gap between journals covering purely academic research and more pragmatic articles and opinions published elsewhere.
Original research and commentary on the scholarship of teaching and learning in higher education. Teaching & Learning Inquiry (TLI) is the flagship publication of the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (ISSOTL).
Teaching in Higher Education publishes scholarly work that critically examines and interrogates the values and presuppositions underpinning teaching, introduces theoretical perspectives and insights drawn from different disciplinary and methodological frameworks, and considers how teaching and research can be brought into a closer relationship.
