The University Library subscribes to several databases that can be used to retrieve periodical articles on topics related to the Black experience in Canada. Access to these databases is available to the university's students, staff and faculty.

 

Africa and the African Diaspora

Bibliography of Africana Periodical Literature Database - English language and multilingual journals and periodicals that specialize in African Studies or the African continent. 

Black Studies Center - historical and current material for researching the past, present and future of African Americans, the wider African Diaspora, and Africa itself. 

Black Thought and Culture - non-fiction published works of leading African Americans. 

Black Drama and Theatre

Black Drama – 1850 to Present - productions, theaters, production companies, selected playbills, production photographs and other ephemera related to the plays.

North American Theatre Online - covers Canadian and American Theatre. 

Culture, Economics and Politics

Alternative Press Index - journals covering cultural, economic, political and social change.

Canadian Business and Current Affairs - Canada’s largest and most comprehensive bibliographic full text reference and current events database. 

Canadian Periodical Index - Canadian and international academic journals, magazines, and newspapers. 

PAIS Index - provides historical perspective on many of the 20th century’s public and social policies.

Politics Collection - international literature in political science and public administration/policy. 

History

America History and Life - U.S. and Canadian history, culture and current affairs.   

Bibliography of British and Irish History - bibliographic data on historical writing dealing with the British Isles, and with the British empire and commonwealth – from 55BC to the present.

British Periodicals Online - periodicals from the late seventeenth century to the early twentieth and includes topics, such as, literature, philosophy, history, science, music, art, drama, archaeology and architecture.

C19: The Nineteenth Century Index - includes more than three million records from British Periodicals Collections I and II

Early Canadiana Online- a bilingual digital library of primary (source) documents of early Canadian printed publications including books, annuals and periodicals. 

Empire Online -images of original manuscript and printed documents from libraries and archives around the world. Africa, the Americas, Australasia, Oceania and South Asia are covered. 

Exploring Race in Society - a free research database offering essential content covering important issues related to race in society today. Essays, articles, reports and other reliable sources provide an in-depth look at the history of race and provide critical context for learning more about topics associated with race, ethnicity, diversity and inclusiveness.

Frontier Life : Borderlands, Settlement & Colonial Encounters - primary documents of various European and colonial regions of North America, Africa and Australasia (from 1650-1920).

Historical Abstracts - abstracts of articles from 2,000 journals relating to the history of the world (excluding Canada and the US) from 1450 to the present. 

Nineteenth Century Collection - monographs, newspapers, pamphlets, manuscripts, ephemera, maps, photographs, statistics, and other kinds of documents in both Western and non-Western languages.

Slavery, Abolition and Social Justice, 1490-2007 - resource on trans-Atlantic slavery and abolition 

Women and Social Movements in the U.S., 1600-2000 - archives with more than 5,100 documents and 175,000 pages of additional full-text documents, written by 2,800 primary authors. It also includes book, film, and website reviews, notes from the archives, and teaching tools.

Literature and Oral History

Literature Resource Centre - Biographical information, literary criticism and reviews in all disciplines 

North American Women’s Letters and Diaries - experiences of 1,300+ women and 150,000 pages of diaries and letters. 

Oral History Online - collections of Oral History in English from around the world.

The Social

JSTOR - a full text digital archive of core scholarly journals with complete back runs of many titles. As part of JSTOR’s agreement with publishers, current issues (usually the last 3 – 5 years) are not digitized by JSTOR and may be obtained elsewhere. 

LGBT Life - contains significant gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender journals, magazines and regional newspapers.

Project Muse - literature and criticism, history, the visual and performing arts, cultural studies, education, political science, gender studies, and many others.

Sociology Collection - journal articles, books, book chapters, dissertations, working papers, and more, including full-text from hundreds of leading sociology journals.
