About the Company Research Guide
The Company Research Guide contains a selection of resources that will help you find information on publicly-traded and private companies for the purpose of business research. Use the tabs at the left of the guide to select the kind of information that you are looking for, then select a database or resource that suits your needs. Many other resources exist, as searches on the Internet, or additional databases will show.
Company Information
These resources provide profiles, reports and statistics on private and public companies. Use these to research a company's finances, executives, business strategy and placement within a market.
Company Filings and Annual Reports
Business filings are forms required by to be filed with securities' regulatory agencies. They describe the financial status of the company and changes in its administration, organization, and operations. SEDAR is a tool used in Canada, while EDGAR is a tool used by the US.
Company Histories
Company Histories describe the past operations of businesses, often including information on foundation and incorporation, mergers and acquisitions, notable business deals, changes in company leadership, etc.
CSR
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is defined by Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada, Trade Topics, as the voluntary activities undertaken by a company to operate in an economic, social and environmentally sustainable manner. .
Directories
Business directories contain extensive listings of businesses, often organized by sector, product, or service.
Financials and Ratios
Financials and Ratios provide key figures related to the company performance and activity.
Market Share
Market Share represents the proportion of an industry or market that the business serves. It serves as a measure of the company's importance within its field.
Mergers and Acquisitions
These resources will help you find information on past and current mergers and acquisitions.
News
These resources will help you find news resources related to business. The resources are divided into three categories: individual news sources, current news databases, and historical news databases.
SWOTS
These resources provide access to SWOTS analysis, which considers the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats involved in business ventures.
